The first known beer recipe was created by Black Sumerian women—most likely priestesses of Ninkasi—In Mesopotamia dating back to 3900 B.C. Archaeologists have found that Sumerians introduced beer to Egyptians, who later crafted a sophisticated beer trade. Fast forward a few thousand years and beer has been embraced by people of every race and nationality worldwide, yet many Black brewers are an afterthought in the beer business that their ancestors pioneered. The “Beer is Black History” capsule collection presented by Draught Season’s purpose is to bring light to the history of beer and to spotlight the amazing Black brewers and Black-owned breweries that are pushing the craft beer culture forward.
